Hand Eye Society Seeks Board Members
Position Title: Board of Directors Board Member
Position Type: Volunteer 5 hours/month
Position Start Date: January 2015
Location: Toronto
The Hand Eye Society is a Toronto not-for-profit that showcases and facilitates the creation of videogames made primarily for creative expression. We run game creation incubators, inclusive game literacy programs with established partners like Art Starts, and a variety of public exhibitions with high profile partners like the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Toronto Public Library. Founded in 2009, it is the oldest videogame arts organization in the world.
“The Hand Eye Society both initiated and have consistently innovated in making videogames an integral and respectable part of our broader cultural fabric… All of us, everywhere else in the world, are still simply following the trails they’ve blazed.”
–Brandon Boyer, Independent Games Festival Chairman

Volunteer Position Description
Having just had our fifth birthday, we are very established within the city’s videogame community, but are still a fledgling arts organization. There is a tremendous opportunity for the organization to grow — as our culture rethinks the value of videogames, we are in high demand.
We are looking to recruit experienced board members who would be able to help us navigate our upcoming challenges of long-term sustainability, specifically:
Fundraising: Currently we have multi-year public funding, but we are looking to diversify our income streams to include membership/donor support, as well as sponsorships that don’t undercut our message of non-commercial games expression.
Local and International Partnerships: We are looking to connect with local arts organizations active in other media, to amplify what we can do together and create efficiencies where possible. We are also looking to collaborate with like-minded organizations in other cities to expand cross-talk and collaboration between our cities.
Long Term Organizational Planning: We need expertise to help establish timelines and goals for the next several years.
General Responsibilities: Attending board meetings 3 times a year, contributing on email threads, advising a committee, and actively contributing to the vibrancy of the organization.
This appointment would be for a two-year term, renewable for up 3 terms total.
The ideal candidate would demonstrate:
• Prior experience on a non-profit Board or other related governance experience;
• Readiness to support fundraising for the Hand Eye Society through ideas, contacts and experience;
• Passion for the organization’s mission to serve;
• Strong communication and networking skills.
Deep knowledge of games or the games community are not a prerequisite, provided other skills are present.
The Hand Eye Society has a mandate committed to diversity and is an equal opportunity employer.
Please forward a cover letter and resume in one document to Jim Munroe, Executive Director by December 19th, 2014.
