Reading Beyond Presence: Race & Ethnicity in Games
Reading Beyond Presence is an interactive seminar led by games writer and Dames Making Games member Soha Kareem, and will focus on how racial identities can be integrated into the games we play and talk about on a daily basis. Soha will share her latest project, a Twine titled Penalties, that reflects on how it feels to be a Palestinian in today’s world, and will also challenge the ways in which race has been represented and incorporated into the narrative of mainstream games.
A discussion will be co-facilitated by Hisayo Horie, an art-based educator and community artist who specializes in film and digital storytelling. Hisayo’s work titled Don’t Leave Your Friends Behind was featured in DMG’s latest incubator Junicorn, where they discussed how we can hold each other back in identity-based communities that entail differences and power dynamics within.
This event is open to all in hopes that we continue working together to make the gaming community a welcome space for everyone!
