Teach a Russian Subway Dog New Tricks, Learn Unreal Skills
September’s school-starting vibe gets people all excited about learning! Well, we’re helping bring you two MORE events this month (in addition to the Stencyl workshops we announced) that’ll learn you some serious game skills. For free!
From the Introduction to Unreal Workshop Eventbrite page:
Epic Evangelist Andy Hess will conduct Intro to Unreal, a 4 hour tutorial which teaches the basics of Unreal Engine by creating a simple VR game for mobile deployment.
Topics include: UI, terminology, conventions, content management, and learning resources. Additional topics include an introduction to materials & lighting, Blueprints, and the Unreal Game Framework.
This tutorial is suitable for all game development disciplines: art, design, and programming. No prior knowledge of Unreal Engine 4 is necessary, but attendees should have working knowledge of the 3D game development pipeline. Refreshments will be provided.
Andy Hess, Evangelist, Epic Games: As Evangelist at Epic Games, Andy’s role is to help independent game developers build great games with Unreal Engine 4. Andy’s previous experience includes Apple, Ageia, and NVIDA – a 20 year career working with game developers to build amazing gaming experiences.

You can get free tickets here while they last! Even if they hadn’t generously sponsored the Hand Eye Society Ball this year, we’d be pleased to signal boost for this. Thanks to U of T’s Steve Engels for the venue hookup and Get Set Games’ Rob Segal for the intro!
And we’re proud to present the seventh episode of Game Dialogues, our monthly speaker series on videogame art and design:
RAISING RUSSIAN SUBWAY DOGS FROM STRAY PUP TO GROWN HOUND!
Local indie dev Spooky Squid Games’ latest project, RUSSIAN SUBWAY DOGS, started as a simple jam game inspired by the real life stray dogs of the Moscow Metro. Artist/Designer/Pixel Art Master/HES Co-Founder Miguel Sternberg talks about the creation of the game from its early jam roots to the current version on Kickstarter and beyond. This will be a design-centred talk on the process of expanding a novel game concept to provide more depth without destroying the essential essence of what makes it fun.
For those of you who have just started taking a game design course at school, or people wondering how to turn your game from the initial idea and concept stage into actual engaging mechanics, this will be especially useful!
