Hi Toronto Indie friends,

Game art super hero, Messhof, will be exhibiting some form of gamey artyness at your local MOCCA for the Images Festival.

The opening reception is April 3rd, 7-10 pm. Let’s all go an give him a huge indie man-hug.

the bugger never mentioned any of this at gdc! is he actually coming to toronto too, or just his works?

From what he told me, he should be here today. But he was trying to cross the border with only his ID card, so…. But yeah, he’ll be here so we should all go check it out and drink beers after.

I probably ought to have my ear to the ground more, because when I met him last week I’d only vaguely heard of MESSHOF. His awesome pixelart business card clued me in pretty that he was for real!

Cool guy, and it’s pretty great to see he’s got his pixels & videogames on the fine art/museum circuit.

Maybe this little news item oughta be on the front page of the Hand Eye Society (visible to non-members )? If we gather up all of Toronto’s lovely indie videogame crowd to attend the opening reception on Friday we could give MESSHOF’s exhibition the welcome it probably deserves!

Maybe this is a step too far, but perhaps a Hand Eye Society-sanctioned, post-reception drink might also be in order?

Definitely but…. how do I post on the front page:)

Hmm.. Munroe might know about the workings of the Hand Eye. It might be a matter of putting the item in something other than chit-chat? Or maybe only a few members have access to the front page (which would be reasonable also)?

I’ve just been catching up on MESSHOF’s videogames, specifically Municipal Abortionist and Flywheel. There’s an intense communication going on in there, he’s a legit phenomenon.

I also belatedly started to explore the Cactus arcade. MESSHOF and Cactus are creating the videogames that live in my wildest dreams, it’s crazy that I’m only waking up to this now. Where have I been!?

    >> it’s crazy that I’m only waking up to this now. Where have I been!?

    playing too much motorstorm? ;)

also, i think the page is public now. my guess is that it needs to be in the “social” category.

Looks like you figured out the system all on your own! Nice.

How did the event go? My wife had a rock show so I was babysitting.

It was great! Messhof is a totally radical dude and his game is exactly as hilarious as it is disturbing.

Keenly observed, guilty as charged. :P

Yeah, Mark Essen is great, his videogames kick ass.

It was a real treat to see 8-bit videogames & comfortable couches in a fancy museum space!

Mark’s freely distributed drink tickets were a nice touch too. :)

    Two thoughts:
    1. 8-bit videogames + museum/gallery spaces = urgent goal.

    2. Playing and sharing videogames in a spacious, comfortable & semi-public downtown space = genius.

Definitely! Regarding #1, we all talked about the need to create a GAMMA-esq event in Toronto. It seems we’re all on the same page about it so let’s do it! GAMMA Jr.

Yeah, this sounds like something that needs to happen. Pixel Gallery seems like a pretty nice place to start.

Hmmmm….GAMMA happens alongside MIGS. Game Over (the show at Giant Robot) happens alongside GDC. Is there some event in Toronto that’s worth piggybacking this kind of thing onto, like when a target (or adjacent) audience is in town anyways? I guess Comic-Con might not be the right choice for various reasons (an odd time of year, too close to PAX, maybe to nerdcore). What about Word on the Street? Comic Arts Festival? Nuit Blanche? Something else?

Also, isn’t GAMMA = Game Arts Montreal? I think we probably ought to coin a Toronto-centric name, although some affiliation with the GAMMA crowd would be a very great thing.
    Hmmm……

    Hey all –

What about TARGA = Toronto Arts & Games.

  • By raigan, April 11, 2009 @ 12:32 pm

    TARGA is awesome!!
