Most game jams come with the expectation to make something playable, a working prototype, the seed of something bigger. This jam is different.

We’re looking for 6 people from various disciplines, who have the ability to distill current challenges and future dreams into small, poetic game-like experiences. Taking place over three days at Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley, the selected participants will tour the centre to learn about its history and various initiatives. They will then spend 3 days in April designing playful, bite-sized interactive works based on the interconnected networks of natural and urban systems at the Brick Works.

The final game concepts will be documented in the form of a digital and printed zine, designed by Chris White and illustrated by 6 local illustrators to be paired up with each game jammer. The zine will be printed and launched on June 16 to the public.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”28663″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=”” css=”.vc_custom_1549509988281{padding-top: 1.5em !important;padding-bottom: 1.5em !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”grid” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” background_color=”#def6fc” padding_top=”1 em” padding_bottom=”1 em” css_animation=”” css=”.vc_custom_1548814596662{margin-top: 2.5em !important;padding-top: 2em !important;padding-bottom: 1em !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1548814213904{margin-bottom: 2em !important;}”]

Unlike typical jams, we are de-emphasizing actual production and the focus on screen-based digital games, instead encouraging participants to take a more open-ended approach to the design process. Because the finished project will be a zine, rather than a playable prototype, we are opening the door to artists and creators from non-technical backgrounds. Your ideas can be as big and ambitious or as small and poetic as you want; as long as they are inspired by the Evergreen Brick Works and an evoke something on the page, the only limit is your imagination.

Some examples of things you might come up with: Physical games, board and card games, variations on folk games (like Ring Around the Rosie), interactive poems, maps, thought experiments, site-specific installations, and immersive performance pieces. Even a description of a glimpse of an idea is fine; no need to create an entire design document or ruleset, unless you want to! Maybe you spend the entire weekend working on one idea; maybe you churn out 100 small sketches. The journey is up to you.

Still not sure what we’re looking for? This project was inspired by many other initiatives, many of which are included in the list to the right. Check out the links, get inspired, and don’t forget to apply by February 28![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_separator type=”transparent” down=”2.5em”][vc_column_text]

FAQ

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Do I need game design experience to apply?

Not at all! In fact, we would love to see how folks from other disciplines interpret “games” and “play” based on their own lens of experience. If your background is in writing, poetry, illustration, theatre, environmental law, urban planning, garbage collection, or anything else, and if this project speaks to you in some way, we’d love to hear from you.

Do the jam games need to actually be playable?

Not necessarily. It would be nice if some of them were at least theoretically playable, but we will be selecting applicants based on how everyone’s ideas, interests, and backgrounds complement each other, rather than limiting applicants based on specific criteria. In fact, because the final product is a written zine, you could come up with games that are technically impossible to play but fun to think about. For example: Imagine if you could identify all of the old Don Valley Brick Works bricks that were used to build Toronto over 100 years ago, and played Jenga with them. How many of those bricks still hold up our skyline? Would the city fall apart, or stay standing?

What will the final zine look like?

As this is a highly experimental endeavour, we will be working with the selected Jammers to figure out specifics such as: How many pages will the zine be? Will multiple games be printed per Jammer, or just one highly detailed game? What will the zine be called? Many questions will likely not be answered until after the Jam is finished, but we intend to work with the artists to finalize the details. Some light editing may be requested to ensure consistency, while maintaining the individual voices of the participants.

If I do want to make a screen-based digital game, is that allowed?

Maybe, but we are focusing largely on your creative process and exploratory approach to the work, not necessarily creating something polished or heavily mechanics-driven. The problems you explore will be more conceptual than technical, so we don’t want you to focus all of your time on wrestling with a game-making engine or generating assets. The idea and process are more important than the final product!

What does being a Zine Illustrator entail?

You will be matched by the HES curatorial team to one of the six Jammers. Each illustrator will provide a single image to accompany one jammer’s work, after the Jam.

Are the Zine Illustrators expected to be on-site? If they want to visit the Jammers, will their travel and meals be compensated as well?

The Illustrators will be working directly off the games created by the Jammers during their sessions, so they are not expected to be on-site. Visits are allowed, but will not be compensated for. Travel compensation to the Zine Launch can be arranged.

I have more questions about the game jam program, illustrating, participation, or the Evergreen Brick Works.
