Experimental Art in Unity3D Workshop with Paloma Dawkins!

gardenariumWe’re very excited to announce an upcoming workshop that should be of interest to anyone interested in animation, videogames, glitch art and learning new things! The Toronto Animated Image Society and the Hand Eye Society are proud to present a one-day Unity3D Workshop with Paloma Dawkins. Learn how to create experimental art, trippy visuals, and surreal landscapes in Unity!

Who will be running this workshop?
Paloma Dawkins is a Montreal-based artist and animator who made her first game, Dream Warrior, as part of the HES/TAIS Artsy Games Incubator: Animation Edition in 2014. Soon afterwards, she collaborated with experimental games collective KO-OP Mode to develop a second game, Gardenarium, which was featured at Fantastic Arcade, Mild Rumpus at GDC, and (soon) the EMP museum in Seattle. You can read more about Gardenarium at PolygonRock Paper Shotgun, and KillScreen.

What do I need to bring to the workshop?
Participants are expected to bring their own laptops with a copy of Unity 5.1, the latest version available for free on the Unity website. It’s important for participants to have their own assets too, so please come with a few .PNG images or 3D .FBX models you’d like to play around with. Geometric images is a good suggestion. Optional: FRAPS, a program which will allow participants to record their experiments as videos.

Do I need to know how to program or 3D model?
Some basic familiarity with the Unity interface, C# syntax, and importing images/3D models into Unity is highly recommended. You don’t have to be a coding master, but you should have a working knowledge of concepts such as if/else statements, loops, and Booleans to get the most out of this workshop.

It is also recommended that participants watch these Unity tutorials on 2D and scripting beforehand:

What will I get out of this workshop?
Participants will come away with a series of short visual experiments, such as these examples created by Paloma“Fast Machine: Slowly shifting, traversing alien deserts, awe inducing psychedelia in 1080p.” The purpose of the workshop is to explore Unity as a tool where happy mistakes can happen, allowing artists to be more intuitively connected with the medium rather than following a prescribed set of instructions on how to make a particular type or style of game. Videogames are expanding as an art form and method of creative expression, and participants are encouraged to add their own unique voice to the process!

How do I apply? Where is it and what time? How much does it cost?
